Yesterday after class, we moseyed on down to a little Mexican restaurant called "Jalisco" in search of some queso. I guess I should have learned my lesson with the hamburger; what one thing means to us in the United States does NOT mean the same thing here. The queso arrived at our table and much to our dismay, there was nothing remotely liquid about it. The best description I can come up with is "scrambled eggs gone wrong, mixed with Elmer's glue." There was no dipping involved. You had the cut this cheese.... (haha "cut the cheese," anyone else find that funny?) with a KNIFE. And the longer it sat, the more solidified it became. Finding queso in Costa Rica = FAIL. :( Oh well, you live and learn!
After the queso fiasco, we went to the mall to see a movie since it was half price day! The trick was finding a movie we wanted to see that was at a good time for us, but also in English. We really wanted to see Toy Story 3, but ended up having to go see Shrek 4, which turned out to be totally fine. The movie was great, but I can't figure out what I enjoyed more; the actual movie or what was going on during the movie. We were the only Americans in the theater, and we were sitting on the very front row. Any time there was a sweet part in the movie (Puss 'n Boots making big kitty eyes, Shrek and Fiona kissing, etc.) every Costa Rican in that room would say, "Awwwwwwwww!!!!!" Also, any time one person would "Shh" someone, everyone in the theater followed suit. Just imagine a hundred Costa Ricans, of all ages, going "Shhhhh! Shhhhh!" while the gringas on the front row are cracking up! Oh, how I love it here.
Today we ate lunch at Cafe Kracovia, our favorite place! They have the best coffee and the best desserts! After we finished eating, Hannah, Amy, and I went and scoped out one of the nearby streets for new eating places. We're getting sick of the cafeteria! This was the first time we had really ventured away from our normal routes around campus, and it was obvious that we did not fit in because EVERYONE was staring at us. This used to bother me, but now it's just a normal thing!
Update on the public transportation situation ("el autobus"): I hate it. Especially when it has just rained. Because everyone is wet and sweaty. It smells like 6th grade boys who just came in from recess. Also, there is no concept of personal space once you step on the bus. Let's just leave it at that. I guess it beats walking, right?
The lovely bus... haha.
Family and friends, let me leave you today with this:
